Should Christians Support a Corrupt Government?

Fascism-proper began with Mussolini, well before the Second World War. At that time Fascism had no problem with Jews and the second-in-charge under Mussolini was a Jewish Fascist. Even so, it was a brutal regime. Thousands of Jews became Fascists… something they later regretted when Hitler became dominant.

At about the same time, Hitler began his Nazi party in Germany, modelling it on Mussolini’s Fascism. As with Fascism, thousands of Jews joined the Nazi party before the War, helping Hitler to gain total power, even though he and his members hated Jews. The Italians were uncomfortable with this anti-semitism, but eventually the two movements merged and Jews were targeted as Hitler and his Nazi party took over in Germany and Italy.

During all that time Christians who could do so left Germany and Italy, but many stayed, thinking that the horrific signs in their midst were only transient. (In the 1990s many Christians thought the same about the charismatic Toronto Blessing!). In the end Christians, too, were targeted, because they would not uphold the evils of the wicked regime. They died alongside Jews. And let us not forget the parallel violent regime of Russian communism! Both regimes were socialist and both were evil.

Today, many Christians accept and even vote for socialist governments. They pray that God will support and guide the leaders, under the wrong assumption that we are called to do so by God, though all the signs are that the governments hate God and hate His people! Tony Blair and Gordon Brown are prime examples of this hatred. Barak Obama is even worse, as he blatantly destroys Christian teaching.

These pious Christians go on to rebuke other Christians who will not accept or support the evil governments, saying that God demands that they give such support. Does He? I will show that it is a gross misperception, if not a sin.

What is ‘Imprecatory Prayer’?

The word itself will not be found in scripture, but is found to exist in other guises such as ‘cursing’, etc. It is a widespread view that we may only utter prayers that are supportive and call for the good of someone or some thing. We must certainly prayer for the good of someone, but not in all circumstances. There are times when we may call upon God to remove people or influences so that they may not harm us, or we may even pray that God will remove those who hate us, and Him, permanently.

An imprecatory prayer is one that utters a curse or invokes evil. This will horrify some Christians, especially if they have no idea that imprecation is found in scripture. Yet, we must break the delusion, for huge numbers of Christians are ignorant of the facts, and continue not only to vote for wicked governments and their leaders, but also they denounce Christians who do not! Then, they go on to add to this erroneously-caused misery by insisting on praying for the good of those leaders and governments who hate them and God. To put it bluntly, if they pray for wicked leaders, then why do they not pray for the well-being of Satan? I am not joking!

Psalm 35

As some shake in horror at the thought of imprecatory prayer, believing it is not what we ought to do as believers, let me point out that there are times when this is the only way to pray. The material below contained within brackets was written by Jay Horsley

(God cursed Israel [and many others] for their continued evil, and there are desperate times when we may actually be moved to pray for this to happen.

(Psalm. 35 is the great imprecatory prayer of a righteous man in the Old Testament. David prayed for deliverance because he was surrounded by implacable enemies. David knew that he could not win this fight alone. He needed the help of God, so he asked for it:

“I contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me.

Take hold of buckler and shield, and rise up for my help.

Draw also the spear and the battle-axe to meet those who pursue me; say to my soul, ‘I am your salvation’.”

(David calls on the Lord to take up the struggle for him. The first rule of a righteous imprecatory prayer is that it be offered in a situation where you can rightfully call on God to fight for you. The righteous imprecatory prayer can only be for a righteous cause.

(Second, the righteous imprecatory prayer [not just an evil wishing of injury] is uttered by one in danger of grievous harm, even destruction.

”4 Let those be ashamed and dishonored who seek my life; Let those be turned back and humiliated who devise evil against me.

7 For without cause they hid their net for me; Without cause they dug a pit for my soul.

11 Malicious witnesses rise up; They ask me of things that I do not know.

12 They repay me evil for good, To the bereavement of my soul.

15 But at my stumbling they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together; The smiters whom I did not know gathered together against me, They slandered me without ceasing.

16 Like godless jesters at a feast, They gnashed at me with their teeth.

20 For they do not speak peace, But they devise deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land.”

(This is not to be the appeal of one who is just annoyed or bothered. This is a person suffering greatly at the hands of evil men.

(David was faced with cruel and unrelenting enemies he could not stop. Since David could not stop them, he prayed for God to do it.

“5 Let them be like chaff before the wind, With the angel of the LORD driving them on.

6 Let their way be dark and slippery, With the angel of the LORD pursuing them.

8 Let destruction come upon him unawares; And let the net which he hid catch himself; Into that very destruction let him fall.”

(David knew the character of those who so vehemently opposed him. He knew the only way they would stop was to be made to stop by force. But such force is often beyond the strength of men. Even the most powerful have limits on what they can do. And often this type of prayer will be said by those who have no power at all.

(So the situation in which to offer a righteous imprecatory prayer is 1. when it is a cause that God will support, 2. you are suffering a terrible harm and 3. other means of relief are not available. These are not simply prayers of vengeance, but prayers of dependence on God as the only hope of help. Keeping these things in mind, let us examine the character of the man who can offer such a prayer righteously.

(While calling on the Lord to help, David, like all of us, had to exhibit patience. Patience in waiting on the Lord is an essential element of any prayer, but we can especially see the need when waiting on the Lord to avenge us.

”17 Lord, how long wilt Thou look on? Rescue my soul from their ravages, My only life from the lions.

22 Thou hast seen it, O LORD, do not keep silent; O Lord, do not be far from me.

23 Stir up Thyself, and awake to my right, And to my cause, my God and my Lord.”

(While some would object that it is not patience at all to pray to God for the destruction of their enemies, that idea is simply wrong. If destruction is truly warranted and is the will of God, to pray for it is neither impatient nor wrong. Taking individual vengeance is both wrong and impatient. Rom. 12:19 "Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord."

Not taking one's own vengeance, but waiting on God to use His tools [natural means, governments, other evil men's predilection for evil, etc.] to bring His vengeance is exactly what patience is.

(Also, anyone who would plead for God to relieve him from the evil of his enemies must truly make sure that his enemy cannot rightly ask for the same relief because of the pleader's action. The righteous imprecatory prayer is a tool for the innocent only.

”14 I went about as though it were my friend or brother; I bowed down mourning, as one who sorrows for a mother.

15 But at my stumbling they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together; The smites whom I did not know gathered together against me, They slandered me without ceasing.

24 Judge me, O LORD my God, according to Thy righteousness; And do not let them rejoice over me.”

(This type of prayer is not for those who are involved in mutual recriminations. David pleads his innocence of any wrong-doing that would bring on this kind of hatred. Of course David sinned as all men do, but in his relations with these evil men, who opposed him relentlessly, he was innocent.

(Finally, the one who would offer the imprecatory prayer needs to do so not with a vengeful and hateful heart, but rejoicing in the Lord. This type of prayer is not simply from a desire to harm others, but to have the Lord help stop their evil. When this happens, the joy that we have in the Lord is greatly refreshed.

”9 And my soul shall rejoice in the LORD; It shall exult in His salvation.

10 All my bones will say, "LORD, who is like Thee, Who delivers the afflicted from him who is too strong for him, And the afflicted and the needy from him who robs him?

18 I will give Thee thanks in the great congregation; I will praise Thee among a mighty throng.

28 And my tongue shall declare Thy righteousness And Thy praise all day long.”

(When any prayer is answered we have joy, but when the answer stops the attacks of the enemy our praise should be unceasing, or as David said, "praise all day long."

(We hope that we never need to pray for the Lord to punish evildoers who are harming us, but sometimes that is the only way to find relief. Righteous imprecatory prayer is the last hope of the patient, innocent, faithful saint.

(Use of this type of prayer may not be a pleasant thought, but the grave sin of evil men spoils many things. Imprecatory prayer is one of the helps God extends to us in times of such need.)

I thank Jay Horsley for his fine words, which are exactly as I would express them myself. Now, let us continue to see if we should uphold all leaders and governments in prayer. We can also ask ourselves if we may support a pastor with prayer, if he is not acting or speaking in accordance with God’s word. Can we pray for him? If he refuses to listen to scriptural counsel, and then rebuke, we have no business supporting him in prayer. Rather, we must cast him from both pulpit and membership. Why, then, is it different with governments and ‘political’ leaders? It is not!

“What is a Christian to do when the government protects criminals and criminal activity, such as the abortion clinic? What is a pastor to do when the government, or the news media, or well-funded liberal hate groups persecute and bad-mouth him because of his doctrine? What is a Christian to do when he cannot go to the courts, police, and government for justice? What if the courts, police and government are the criminals?”


Good questions! And most Christians, through ignorance and spiritual paucity, say we must “turn the other cheek”. They do not understand either the times or the meaning of the Bible text they use!

What can we do when government itself is crushing God’s people, forcing immorality and gross evil on us, criminalizing Christians for holding to God’s word and not taking part in the immorality they command, and thereby criminalizing God Himself?

What can we do when it is government that forces us to hand our children over to schools to homosexualise their unformed minds? What can we do when a treasonous government forces us to obey a foreign power, such as the EU and UN, when those powers are Marxist or Fascist, steadily driving Christianity from the face of the earth, with many penalties? What if government, whether national, EU, or UN forces us to comply with Islam? What if our government does not just bring in monolithic taxes for environmental reasons that have no scientific proof, but knows that ‘green’ policies are based on paganism and anti-God philosophy and religion?

Some years ago I said that I was glad I was a Christian, otherwise I would have become a rebel with a machine-gun, hiding in the hills and attacking my enemies! I have a deep sense of justice and could see how governments were going over to evil regimes, causing harm to the people. Do not think I am somehow beyond redemption by saying what I have said. The unsaved man, pushed to his limit, can resort to many ways of relief, including armed revolt. But, do not think such revolt is limited to unsaved men… what of wars to fight back against evil despots who strive to kill us?

What of Christians who are policemen, psychiatric nurses, or soldiers, who protect the nation from murderers or other soldiers intent on mass killings? You see, the idea of imprecatory prayer is founded on a very wide base!

Let us take murder that goes unpunished… Though many claim the Old Testament is not for us because it is Mosaic, they have a wrong regard, for God gave us the Decalogue, none of which has ever been discarded or pushed aside. Very plainly, the Old Testament commands us to put the first-degree murderer to death. Nothing in the New Testament contradicts that command, and Jesus said He did not come to remove God’s laws but to fulfil them. What, then, of imprecatory prayer against leaders and governments?

The Last Resort

Few Christians listen to the watchmen commissioned by God to watch the seasons and times, the movements and men that rule this earth. The watchmen are given gifts and authority to speak, and yet they are generally ignored by the churches. As the churches burrow-down with a false sense of security, governments and others strive to destroy them! We cannot deny that, today, the number of leaders, governments and movements that want to crush Christians is growing and the position is becoming not just untenable but close to fatal. Meanwhile, local Christians refuse to pray against them. Instead they vote for them and give them freedom to act.

Evil abounds and is often led by government and leaders. Yet, despite the illogical and unspiritual refusal by Christians to oppose evil, those who are faithful have one last resort – imprecatory prayer. It is not to gain a political advantage, or to persecute others, or to delight in their demise. It is simply to stay alive, stay worshipping, keep consciences, and stop enemies from destroying us. We have no other resort, except for violence… and that is not an option for Christians (except in sudden self-defence).

So, governments, their leaders, and many movements, are openly defying God. In itself this is not a reason to utter imprecatory prayers. The reason would be if these enemies are actually harming us gratuitously, pushing us ever into a corner, and generally trying to stop our mouths, minds and the Gospel, with laws, prison, police and other sanctions. This is exactly what these people are now doing.

Throughout the world governments are listening to spiteful liberals and hateful immorals, making laws that criminalize Christians and their Gospel. Many have tried to persuade by reason, but have failed. We MUST pray for their downfall! Leaders who hate us firstly hate Christ and the Father, and He does not tolerate the existence of enemies of Himself or us. God hates those who hate Him! And if they hate Him, they also hate us. We have no command from God to support or pray nicely for people who thus hate. Rather, He curses them and warns of their removal or other demise.

If you do not like these words, please open yourself to what God says in His word!

“Imprecatory prayer is a last resort to God for justice. The so-called ‘curses’ are simply the just penalty called for in the scriptures for the alleged crime. Imprecatory prayer is an appeal to the court of divine justice (1) for protection and (2) the appropriate punishment for the criminals.”


In many ways the only respite or protection is the death of those who wish to harm us. This is why God visited homosexuals with AIDS. Of this I am convinced. But, their sins are such that they have transcended fatal diseases by making them a virtue! Now, these enemies of God and His people are literally rampaging the world hungry for total immorality and annihilation of Christians. They are, in normal terms, unstoppable. And governments everywhere are taking their hateful, evil side. Our only resort, then, is to pray for their total downfall; if this means their death, then so be it, for the final answer is in God’s hands. He has done it through disease… perhaps He will do so again, but with even greater force.

Leaders and Governments

It is (apparently) not socially acceptable to say “I told you so”. But, I am saying it now: “I told you so!” As a watchman I used up all my human strength to bring warnings to Christians about homosexuality. I did the same about Islam and environmentalism, in each case shouting out the dire consequences of not facing the enemy head-on. Those consequences are now with us. The harm is even greater than I realised, but few Christians will pray against the enemy!

Though I also warned against not just the socialist government, but against the formation of a supposed ‘safer’ option, we now have that ‘safer’ option! In Britain it is the Tory government allied to the ‘LibDems’. In the USA it is a fake president, Obama and his wicked Democrats. In both cases the EU and UN cause further immense harm. The warnings went unheeded and Christians who thought they were being clever, if not ultra-pious, voted-in the very political leaders and movements that will bring their downfall! This is how foolish Christians have become, and it will get worse, because those same Christians are taking part in denouncing those of us who know the truth. They are, without realising it, becoming just as Marxist and Fascist as those who rule. This means disaster for all genuine Christians.

In this article I am NOT saying we may pray to get rid of someone or a government because we simply dislike them, or because we are at odds with them for minor reasons. This is because such prayers are not genuine, but are vengeful. “Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord, I shall repay.” (Romans 12:19, Hebrews 10:30).

The call for imprecatory prayer goes far beyond vengeance, because it is superior to it. Only God can take revenge with purity and holiness. If all we want is revenge, because we have been harmed, then forget imprecatory prayer. God will not listen anyway. Imprecatory prayer is used when we are literally out of all options and we are about to be harmed, or are being harmed, with no known possible relief or way out. Some think imprecatory prayers are ‘Old Testament’. Because we have had few reasons to utter them today, it does not mean they are not needed or warranted.

The Time Has Come

Airports have permanent fire-fighters on staff, ready for all eventualities. They are hardly ever needed… but does that mean they must be discarded or forgotten? Of course not. The reason they are kept on staff is that if there were to be any problem it would likely be massive. In the same way, Christians have hitherto had little need to utter imprecatory prayers, but that time has now come.

Do you really think Christians being hounded, tortured and killed by Roman Catholic Inquisitors did not pray for God to remove their enemies? Do you think Christians in African states today, who are burned out and killed by Muslims, do not pray for the removal of the Islamic regime? There is no reality in the thinking of many Christians in ‘safe’ countries! There is also no reality in Christians in the west who believe there is no danger to them from their leaders and governments

In my own life I have been literally persecuted and attacked (both physically and otherwise) because I opposed homosexuality. Intellectual attacks came because I opposed the paganism of environmentalism. There is certainly persecution about, but the media will not cover it. So, fellow believers think we are lying, or that we have ‘backslidden’ when we counsel them to pray against government and others.

Ananias, Sapphira, and Judas died for their sins. So did certain rulers who opposed Paul, etc. Paul caused a sorcerer to be blinded for a season. He damned those who perverted the course of the Gospel. There are other examples.

Read Romans 1, and you will find God’s curse upon homosexuals, who, He said, would never enter Heaven if they did not repent. We are also told by Paul that those who preach another gospel are cursed, their messages being anathema.

God says we may never help those who hate Him. He curses those who do so, and all who refuse the Gospel. Yet, arrogant Christians today dare to pray for the well-being of leaders and governments that hate God! We cannot ever pray for those who hate God – hatred being shown in many ways. Rather, we can only pray that they are silenced, stopped, or removed.

Put There By God?

Some today claim that because God put wicked leaders in charge, Christians have no right to pray against them, but must support them. Friends, this is nonsense, and increases the wickedness. No genuine believer can ever pray for the well-being of wicked men. If you think the imprecations in the Old Testament are not for us, then you are really saying parts of the Old Testament are useless and without worth.

Yes, we must love our enemies, but this ‘love’ is the most basic kind, meaning respect for the person, just because the person is created. If you love your child does this mean you do not chastise him or take sometimes drastic action?

Jesus Himself spoke in an imprecatory manner on many occasions to the Pharisees, scribes and Sanhedrin. Paul cursed all who did not love Christ or who preached a false gospel (Galatians 1:8-9; 1 Corinthians 16:22; Galatians 5:12; 2 Timothy 4:14, etc). We MUST hate sin and those who do it. The usual come-back, that we must “hate the sin and love the sinner”, is without scriptural foundation (see separate article on this). Both are inseparable, which is why those who hate God, sin, end up in hell. The idea comes from Hinduism, not the Bible!

Hating Wickedness

I am not talking about mere emotional hatred, which is also sin, but an holy judgment because of continuing and unrepented evil. This is when we loathe, and wish gone, the sin and those who commit it. I have been attacked many, many times. I have had death threats and have been driven from my career, causing both moral and financial distress. In all instances I can honestly say I never hated my enemies in the vengeance sense, though they inflicted huge damage on me.

On odd occasions I did start to think of vengeance, but stopped it once I realised what I was thinking; then I repented and asked the Lord for help. So, one can hate in an holy sense without seeking vengeance for ones’ self. This is what is needed when uttering an imprecatory prayer, because it is not personal hatred, but God’s hatred for what is wicked and against Him. And what is against God also harms us. Thus, imprecatory prayer is sometimes required.

It is just silly talk to say we do not hate wickedness, when we do. Most Christians keep their thoughts of vengeance to themselves, pretending they do not exist. So, they harbour evil thoughts but tell others they may not imprecate in prayer! This is nothing but a lie, hypocritical. Be honest!

I want to know how ultra-pious Christians will act when enemies come for them personally. What would they do? Of course, they will stay silent and accept their fate. That is what the men and women said before they were captured and threatened with lions and the sword! A large number, though swearing allegiance to the Lord beforehand, publicly recanted. Their fear took over. Think you might be different in such soft countries as we have in the west? Frankly, I do not believe you.

Today, we have enemies who MUST be silenced, stopped, or removed. Only God can do it. Therefore, we must utter imprecatory prayers. Christians who have little knowledge tend to talk only of ‘love’, even though they do not understand what ‘love’ means in scripture. It is, then, a sign of spiritual and factual immaturity.
